ROSES TEA ROOMS WINS THE PRESTIGIOUS TEA GUILD AWARD OF EXCELLENCE 2009 – given in recognition of achieving the very highest standards in the service of tea and complementary foods.

We are honoured to be the recipients of such a prestigious award and have been working towards this recognition for nearly four years.

The UK Tea Council’s team of Tea Guild travel the country to seek out the annual winners of the “Top London” and “Top Tea Place” awards. The Tea Guild team of tea experts have, and always anonymously, taken tea in hotels and tearooms in London and across Britain to find the finest tea experience.

The judges awarded points for the variety, excellence and knowledge of the teas offered, together with excellent food, service, décor, ambience, and presentation.  As Michelle Foulia says “We are proud members of The Tea Guild and are absolutely delighted and thrilled to receive this marvellous and prestigious award.  It is a real honour and means everything to us.  We have all worked extremely hard and put a huge amount of effort into creating a place where the quality of food and high standards of customer service are paramount.

Inspecting afternoon tea venues might seem like a dream job, but an anonymous Tea Guild inspector says that it's not all plain sailing. "It requires a certain amount of skill to ask sufficient questions, in order to get the information we need, but without leaving the suspicion that we might be inspecting the premises" he revealed. On an average visit, what do the inspectors look for?

The ultimate afternoon tea experience should make you feel like you want for nothing with welcoming staff in attendance.

As well as reporting on the variety, quality, freshness and colour of teas served, inspectors give marks in fifteen categories which include the venues' cleanliness, the food on offer, value for money, staff attitude and knowledge of the teas available and ambience and decor.

Bonus points can be gained if a tea room or hotel is particularly outstanding (perhaps if there are magazines on hand for guests to read or a pianist playing). Marks are lost if there are scratched skirting boards or scruffy waitresses.

After the inspection a comprehensive 2 page report is submitted to the Tea Guild, with all the details of their visit and an overall points score. Each member of the Tea Guild will be visited twice to build up an average score.

A love and understanding of tea is important part of the job, but enjoying eating finger sandwiches isn't the only requirement. All the inspectors have been Directors of tea companies, now or in the past, and have finely tuned palates so they can appreciate and judge a tea's freshness, strength and colouring.

Michelle says “As you can imagine after such scrutiny from undercover Tea Guild Inspectors, we are delighted to receive this amazing accolade which will be displayed in the Tea Rooms for all to see”. You can watch the Liverpool Echo interview with Michelle following the award.

THE WORMS ARE COMING!

We are always trying to reduce the waste we produce at the Tea Rooms and we shall soon have a team of hungry worms living rent-free in our wormery. They will be waiting to polish off anything left by our customers (that is safe for them to eat of course!) We have been looking forward to this for a long time but we have had to wait for the nice weather to arrive before the worms can be safely settled into their new home!

LANDFILL NEWS

B & M Waste Management who dispose of our waste have been working very hard indeed to reduce their landfill quota – which is why we use them as our refuse collectors. They have now reduced their landfill to 2% which is a huge achievement considering the average amount of waste that goes into landfill at the moment is a staggering 40%! So congratulations to them - and what is even better is that the recycling of this waste is now processed locally in Knowsley, Liverpool so we are of course more than happy to support this initiative.

Last month (February) i was shocked and very pleasantly surprised to receive a letter informing me that I had been nominated to be 'Cheshire woman of the year' by the NSPCC!!

The presentation luncheon will take place in Chester on Wed 21st of March 2007. I cant wait, and feel so honored to have been nominated. We are planning some fundraising events over the coming months for the NSPCC as well as for other local charities so please keep checking back for announcements. In addition if there is a charity or cause close to your heart, however big or small, we would love to hear about it and may choose to support it so please email me telling me all about it.

Access audit

We have recently completed an access audit through the Merseyside disability federation. Although the tea rooms is quite small we have tried to make it as accessible as possible. However the access audit has highlighted certain areas of improvement however small and we will be working on incorporating these. We want Roses Tea rooms to be accessible to everyone and are always happy to discuss any issues with our customers. If you have any suggestions or issues you would like to raise on this matter please email or call me.
